Patterns of Clients’ Service Use and Treatment-Engagement: Evidence from a Peer-Led Recovery Community Center

IRIS Pilot Project Findings

This IRIS-funded study examined client service use and treatment engagement using administrative data from the peer-led recovery center, Voices of Hope, Inc. (VOH). Results indicated that the service used by the greatest number of clients was phone peer support (56.6%). There were 19% of clients who engaged in treatment. Clients who engaged in treatment had a significantly higher number of encounters compared to those who did not (31.6 vs. 5.3) and a significantly longer duration of time as a client (11 vs. 4 months). People who sought treatment were significantly more likely to use 11 of 14 service types compared to those who did not.

These findings indicate that keeping clients engaged and providing services no matter what their stage within the recovery process is important, including to support future treatment engagement. Future community-academic partnerships could build on this research to examine other outcomes besides treatment, like recovery capital, and to support agencies to continually improve data collection and measurement procedures. Training Paramedics to Administer Buprenorphine in the Field

Research Corner: Emerging recovery research to inform practice, policy, and further study

In February 2025, House Bill 1131, titled Public Health - Buprenorphine - Training Grant Program and Workgroup was introduced in Maryland. This bill proposes to establish the Buprenorphine Training Grant Program to help counties with the expense of training paramedics to administer buprenorphine. In this research corner, we summarize two research articles that examined the effectiveness of initiating buprenorphine by a trained EMS team. The first article presents the first-year results of a pilot program in California, followed by a second retrospective cohort study conducted in an urban New Jersey community.
