Dear UMSSW Alumni,

On behalf of the UMSSW Alumni Association Board of Directors I write to inform you that this past summer, the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB), who is responsible for creating and administering the National Social Work licensing exam, released disaggregated exam pass rates. Across MSW programs, these descriptive data show disparities in pass rates based on race, age, and primary language. The disparity in pass rates for Black test takers compared to White test takers is particularly egregious. Systemic biases in the exam process have likely contributed to the documented shortage of diverse licensed social workers.

We understand the complexities around finding equitable solutions for addressing these systemic biases, and as the Alumni Association Board of Directors, we are committed to being a part of the local and national discussions around resolving these issues. The school has formed Racial Disparity Workgroup as a first step in figuring out how to move forward. In collaboration with the Workgroup, we will assist with a few of their short-term strategies such as listening sessions and test prep for students.

As members of the UMSSW alumni community and the social work profession, we have a vested interest in working to dismantle the foundational disparities within our profession and making it a more equitable space for the next generation. Stay tuned in the coming months for ways you can play an active role in this work.

Sincerely,

Lori James-Townes, LCSW-C, MSW ’91

Alumni Association Board of Directors, President

Survey to Measure Impact of Public Service Loan Forgiveness on Borrowers' Well-Being
TAKE SURVEY NOW: Borrowers applying for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) or who have received student debt forgiveness through the PSLF program are invited to take the survey. Last day to take the survey is January 31, 2023. The survey is now password-protected. Use PSLF as the password.

NASW invites borrowers to participate in an innovative and important new survey (password: PSLF) that seeks to measure the impact of PSLF on borrowers' well-being, including financially related stress, life satisfaction, mental distress, perceived overall stress, and job satisfaction. The 10-minute survey (password: PSLF) is a part of a three-year project aiming to link various dimensions of subjective well-being with the experience, and expectation, of loan forgiveness through PSLF. This research will help contribute to debate and discourse related to the PSLF program and to student loan debt cancellation more widely. It’s critically important that the experiences of social workers are represented in this research because social workers typically have high amounts of student debt and oftentimes low starting salaries.

Surveys must be submitted by January 31, 2023. LEARN MORE about the survey, first round of survey findings, the researchers, and the chance to receive up to $50 in gift cards by completing the survey.

Alumni Career Services
The School of Social Work is undergoing the construction of a new website which will enhance our ability to share social work jobs within our student and alumni communities.

In the meantime, we are gathering available jobs via the following form: Post Your Social Work Job.

Jobs will be gathered into one email and sent to current students, recent graduates, and members of the alumni association on a bi-weekly basis until the new site is live.

Thank you for your ongoing interest in hiring our MSW graduates!

Research Assistant Professor

Applications are being accepted for a Research As
sistant Professor faculty position in the area of behavioral health. Candidates should have a PhD in social work, public health, health services research or a related program to be considered the position.

The Lower Shore Clinic (LSC) has partnered with the University of Maryland School of Social Work (UMSSW) to fund a full time Research Assistant Professor (RAP) for an initial period of three years. This UMSSW RAP faculty member will be embedded at the LSC and work with LSC administration, clinical staff, and consumers to research and develop an evidenced-based theory and translation into practice for behavioral health programs using the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) as the main driver of the model of care. Using the LSC model of care as the framework and LSC clinical and billing data, the UMSSW RAP will research the effectiveness of this model with a goal of identifying what works and what does not work, while fully collaborating with LSC stakeholders to build out innovative strategies that improve practices in combination with nudge concepts designed to improve outcomes for patients and the broader community.
