The Elevating Equity Subcommittee of the Maryland Pyramid Model State Leadership Team (SLT) has continued meeting monthly to explore the characteristics of White Supremacy Culture in the ongoing efforts to foster an inclusive and equitable environment as we facilitate the implementation of the Pyramid Model throughout Maryland.
The Maryland Pyramid Model serves as our guide for promoting social-emotional competence and preventing challenging behaviors in young children. White Supremacy Culture encompasses norms and behaviors that perpetuate inequities and hinders the subcommittee’s efforts. By proactively examining and addressing these characteristics, we take a significant step towards dismantling institutional biases that may exist within our practices. As we strive to create nurturing learning environments, it is essential to recognize and dismantle any systemic barriers that may impede the achievement of our goal to meet the needs of children who are Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), with vary abilities, speak English as a second language (ESL), engaged in special education, and members of non-traditional households.
During our conversations in the Elevating Equity Subcommittee meetings, we examine how White Supremacy Culture comes into play with our implementation of the Pyramid Model in Maryland. We have been discussing the implications for:
- State-level decision-making
- Workforce
- Training, coaching content, structure, and/or process
- Families
- Classrooms and direct services for children

Pyramid Model work is continuing at Maryland’s First PM Implementation Sites, where all 5 five sites have established Program Leadership Teams that meet monthly and are facilitated by Pyramid Model Program Coaches. All sites have completed their initial Benchmarks of Quality (BOQ) and continue to work through the implementation process with support from the site coaches.
The PIEC team began holding quarterly directors’ meeting, during which directors had the opportunity to connect with each other and learn about their success and challenges with Pyramid Model implementation. Additional opportunities for directors to connect are planned, as well as one on one support for directors via virtual meetings and in person site visits with PIEC team members.
We congratulate the first cohort of Implementation Sites on their success in this program and are so grateful for their ongoing collaboration!
